Kate has held numerous leadership positions in for profit, non-profit and higher education over her 40year career. She is currently a Professor in a Masters of Organizational Leadership Program where she created a curriculum for a new course “Engaging Senior Leadership”, focused on developing skills for influencing positive change in organizations.

Prior to teaching, she developed, piloted and executed the first registered pre-apprenticeship program with the CT Department of Labor for an insurance sales certificate, Kate established more than 40 employer partnerships within the insurance industry and was the primary liaison for all new employer collaborations to create pre-apprenticeships for the Advanced Manufacturing Program

Prior to entering the higher education system, she designed and activated a comprehensive philanthropic platform for Guardian Life Insurance Company, in five of their key markets. This unique approach aligned with the company’s business model and has had a significant impact on the financial literacy and work force readiness of more than 500 community college students. She also served in an advisory capacity to the CEO.

Previously, Kate was The Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Hartford Arts Council. Kate was asked to take on this challenge in 2009, when the organization was close to being financially insolvent. She implemented significant structural changes, renegotiated the office lease, vendor contracts and led the sale of commercial property. Combined, Kate converted a $400,000 deficit into a $200,000 surplus in less than 3 years. Concurrently, she led a strategic planning initiative designed to create greater investment in the overall health of the Arts Community and began the integration of arts education into the Hartford Public School System. She finally led the recruiting effort for her successor in 2011.

Prior to her role at the Greater Hartford Arts Council, Kate was Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for Travelers Companies. Reporting directly to the CEO, she was responsible for field distribution, branding, public relations, marketing, communications and advertising. Her key accomplishment was the transformation of the field underwriting organization from business line silos into geographically aligned, profit centers with 13 Regional Presidents reporting to her. She also led the initiative and negotiation for the return of the iconic red umbrella icon from Citigroup back to Travelers in 2007. Kate envisioned and implemented Travelers’ Education Access Initiative in the Hartford region to create broad access to highly desired entry-level opportunities within the Insurance and Financial Services Sector for economically underserved community college students.

Since joining Travelers in 1984, Kate served in numerous leadership positions in the areas of product development, risk management, distribution, agency management, sales training, communications and community relations. She was President of the Retail Annuities Division until 2005 where she organically built multiple successful distribution channels and led exponential organic top line growth over several years, while maintaining a rigorous approach to expense management. Under her leadership, revenues grew from $1.7B to $6.5B. During the same period, the company achieved a 22% compound annual growth rate in operating earnings.

Kate holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and psychology from Marymount College in Tarrytown, N.Y., and a master’s degree in economics from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut.

Kate and her husband Glen currently live in Woolwich, Maine.
